5 common new homeowner mistakes

You have just purchased your new home! The points below are a few tips to consider if you are looking to freshen it up and put your own stamp on it.

Sticking with the current layout:

The old owners of the property may have loved their lounge and kitchen to be separate but  that does not have to be the case. If you prefer open plan living then you can look to take down a wall and create that amazing entertaining space that you have always wanted. This applies for most rooms. If you have found the property of your dreams (location, catchment, garden etc.) then do not let the current layout put you off if everything else is exactly what you want.

Getting scared to take a risk

You are now a home owner! This means that you can do what you want when it comes to colour scheme and furniture. If you wanted bright red walls and a black floor then go for it! Please note that the outside of your house may have some restrictions on what you can do.

Rushing your decor

If you are planning to touch up the inside of your new home then my advice is to live in it for a little while (2-3 weeks) to give you an idea of what needs doing first. It is best to research the perfect colours/furniture and find out what works before spending your hard earned money.

Only decorating inside your home

Many people move into a house because they want outside space. If you are looking to improve this then wait until spring to start the work. This is the time where you will start to really take advantage of the space and what you will really want to use it for: From BBQ’S to Croquet…..whatever floats your boat.

Ignoring small problems

Bit of a downside, however, important nonetheless. If you have a small leak for example do not wait for it to get worse, fix it immediately and it will save you a big problem later on.
